Illusion of Color

The objective of this course is to understand how color can enhance a work of art. In this introductory acrylic painting course (advanced drawing course), we will be learning how to use color to give our artwork life. Our first class will be dealing with the color wheel and how different colors interact with each other. We will do some exercises on color mixing and having a tactile grasp of how they work together. Our first project will be an “abstract” optical illusion piece, where students will understand how highlights and shadows can give their pieces a 3-dimensional effect, while experimenting with color theory.

Our second project will follow with a complementary color self portrait, where students will create a portrait with a limited color palette. They will start with a warm or cool toned background. Then, they will use the complementary color of the background to draw in the shadows and a light color (that isn’t white!) to fill in the highlights. You can achieve great depth with color without using a a lot of color.

Our final project will be a fun, mixed media painting dealing with surrealism. The students will paint the background with whatever color relationships we learned over the past course. They will then use plastic/paper/fabric and put it on top of their wet paint to create an interesting effect. Whatever shapes that the students see is free for them to explore! Whether it’s creatures, clouds, trees, etc. It doesn’t have to be realistic, but take one creature at a time and paint in the details. The point is to enhance what they see and what your creature already looks like. They can add highlights and shadows around the outline of the shape.

Learning to sing does not only mean developing the ability to sing in tune. In order to sing with soul and expression, confidence and ease, and yes, in tune, a singer needs to perform a multitude of tasks all at the same time: control their breath, remember the melody and lyrics, think ahead, but at the same time be in the moment, understand their voice and be able to access different registers of voice effortlessly, think about the character, be expressive, properly utilizing accents, dynamics, change of tempo, etc. All this presupposes work on different aspects of singer’s development, often performing seemingly unrelated tasks. A typical voice lesson at Melomania consists of breathing exercises, elements of movement and acting, ear training exercises, posture control, regular vocal warm-ups, and work on musical pieces of student’s choice to combine and implement those different elements. We are confident that with our methods students will develop into well-rounded singers and artists.
